Layer your cups with color, FLIP them over and let the oil rise up collecting rings of color on the way. Turn the cup over to let the paint run out. See some cells form straight away, others will develop over time. Heat for even more cell production.

TIP: The paint mixture should be reasonably thick, but not too thick that the oil cannot rise through it. Add some PVA, acrylic gloss varnish and / or professional pouring medium to help your cells hold their shape. Tilt slowly and evenly as you spread the mixture over the canvas.

TIP: If layering the paint mixture, do so in small amounts to get more variety of paint colors. And remember ‘first in last out’ if you want a specific color on top or at the start or end of the pour.

Pour some colored paints on your canvas and SWIPE a thin paint mixture over your painting with plastic tools or sheets, wooden mixing sticks or damp paper towel; you will get a colorful abundance of cells.

TIP: A Swipe paint mixture is usually thinner, especially the swipe color. If laying your paint down in lines, lay the paint colors in the opposite direction to your swipe if you want your colors to be mixed and not just in lines going down the canvas.

Key Tips to create beautiful cells

Stir the oil in well

Remember to stir the oil in well. This helps to break each drop up and spread it around in the cup, for better results.

You don’t need much oil, around 3 drops per 10 fluid ounces.

If you have difficulty getting cells, don’t use more oil, use some heat and make sure your pouring medium is not too thick.

Stretch the cells to make them bigger

To create large cells you have to tilt the canvas to stretch them out, after the cells have appeared. Stretch slowly from side to side to try and keep the shape of the cell. (If you are having trouble keeping the cell shape, you can tilt to cover the canvas before you apply heat to bring out the cells. You can still stretch them a little, although the cells will usually be smaller, but cute!)

Experiment – go with the flow!

We learn best be doing! Give yourself permission to experiment and see what happens. Apply different amounts of heat, use different acrylic pouring mediums or apply to the canvas in different ways. Make a note of things that work well so you can remember for next time.
